DID Unkas (UNCAS) Leap the Falls

Did he or didn’t he that is the question?

Looking at the falls in Yantis, one must say,” even superman would have a problem jumping this water fall”!

Did the Fox, the great Unkas, Shechaim (Sachem Uncas) of the Mohiigan Tribe, ever really jump over the falls?

What seems to have escaped so many historian is a simple fact, no matter who was chasing whom or when the chase was happening before Sachem Uncas jumped the falls on the land of the Yantic natives, there was no factories, no railroad tracks, no trains and most of all no dam’s, man had made the falls much wider while installing the dams and the railroad tracks.

From what the elders teach, the falls was no more than 1/4 what it is now, if even that, before factories built the two dams to power their mills and the railroad company built a much larger dam and the bridge trestle.

Yes, there was a Yantic people and the Yantic River and Yantic Falls were named after them, most were displaced by the Pequot’s as they settled along the waters, a hand full of them still lived up on the hill while I was growing up, my father would take me along for a visit through the years, I would fill the kerosene containers, clean and repair burners and replace the coal and/or wood at their coal stove, spending money for school and holiday presents.

The dam up river was closed when the factories closed and the water moved more freely to the lower falls taking the dirt with and because of this the lower dam became wider.

Back in the 50’s while in Jr. high I was assigned homework (a one semester history of my people).

It was Jr. high so it was a bit of a challenge but doable, I had a library at the school plus the New London library just down the street and then I picked the minds of the elders, I aced the assignment.

In my Junior year of high school I had the opportunity to write a book report about the homework assignment, being much older and many friends with cars I was able to cover much more ground.

Buckley Jr. high had closed however, the New London, Raymond hill, Preston, North Stonington, Norwich and many more libraries were used.

Because of so much information, plus town halls in each town, my book report was much more complete, I also managed to keep my elders busy checking and re-checking my work, keeping it accurate.

Each elder signed their names with an explanation for help and corrections.

The first, the homework, called Walkingfox Jr. of the Mohegan Indians.

The 2nd, The Mohegan Ancestors by Walkingfox.

Because the words Mixed Breed or percentage was not heard of, everyone just called us

“Mohegan Indians”!

NLHS (New London High School) had copies made for each library and one for the school and for myself.

some of my blogs and websites about this falls.

I have much more information however, I now know who and what is about to happen to this, as with so many of our treasures, I will just have to answer to Kiehtan in prayer!
