The claim that Nelson voted to cut Medicare is mostly false.
Yet another lie by Governor Rick Scott
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. —
A political claim ad Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson voted to cut Medicare and raise taxes.
The ad from the New Republican PAC says Nelson has been running for office almost as long Rick Scott has been alive.
According to WESH 2’s Truth Meter, the claim that Nelson voted to cut Medicare is mostly false.
The claim is tied to votes in 2011 when then-President Barack Obama was wrestling with Republican leadership over the nation’s rising debt.
The “sequester” in 2011 laid out a series of automatic spending cuts in the Budget Control Act.
Nelson voted for the measure.
Analysis by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that the result would be a reduction in Medicare payments by up to 2 percent, but also called it a bipartisan compromise.
Later, in 2013, Nelson again supported a budget resolution, also supported by nine Republicans to lower the federal debt.
It temporarily reduced Medicare payments for some stays in long-term care, according to Kaiser Family Foundation, but was projected to increase Medicare spending by approximately $3.5 billion between 2014 and 2023.
The Truth Meter also said the claim that Nelson raised taxes with his votes is also false.
The Scott campaign is adding votes on nonbinding resolutions.
None of those votes change tax law.
It’s also counting multiple votes on the same tax bills.
“What has he ever done anyway? I can’t think of one thing,” the ad continues.
According to congressional records, Nelson has sponsored and passed into law 25 bills and GovTrack lists him as the third-most “centrist” Democrat in the Senate.
According to our findings, Nelson is expected to vote for the president’s agenda 56 percent of the time.
WEBVTT HERE IS GREG FOX WITH THE TRUTH TEST. >> THESE POLITICAL ADS, HAVE YOU SEEN THIS ONE? GREG: YEP, WE’VE SEEN IT. THAT’S DEMOCRATIC SENATOR BILL NELSON. >> BILL NELSON HAS BEEN RUNNING FOR OFFICE ALMOST AS [O] LONG AS I HAVE BEEN ALIVE. GREG: IT’S FROM THE NEW REPUBLICAN PACK. IT’S RUN BY HIS CHALLENGER, GOVERNOR RICK SCOTT. HERE ARE THE TWO MAIN CLAIMS. >> HE HAS CUT MY MEDICARE AND RAISED TAXES. GREG: LET’S BRING IN THE WESH 2 NEWS TRUTH METER. THE MEDICARE CLAIM IS MOSTLY FALSE. HERE IS WHY. IT’S TIED TO VOTES IN 2011 WHEN THEN PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA WAS WRESTLING WITH REPUBLICAN LEADERSHIP OVER THE NATION’S RISING DEBT. THE SEQUESTER LAID OUT A SERIES OF AUTOMATIC SPENDING CUTS IN THE BUDGET CONTROL ACT. NELSON VOTED YES FOR THE MEASURE. ANALYSIS BY THE KIZER FAMILY FOUNDATION FOUND THAT THE RESULT WOULD BE A REDUCTION IN MEDICARE PAYMENTS BY UP TO 2%, BUT ALSO CALLED IT A BIPARTISAN COMPROMISE. LATER IN 2013, NELSON AGAIN SUPPORTED A BUDGET RESOLUTION ALSO SUPPORTED BY NINE REPUBLICANS TO LOWER THE FEDERAL DEBT. IT TEMPORARILY REDUCED MEDICARE PAYMENTS FOR SOME STAYS IN LONG-TERM CARE BUT WAS PROJECTED TO INCREASE MEDICARE SPENDING BY APPROXIMATELY 3.5 BILLION. ON THE RAISE TAXES CLAIM, THAT’S BEEN REPEATED IN ADS AND BY SCOTT HIMSELF DURING THE SENAT DEBATE CLAIMING HUNDREDS OF HIGHER TAX VOTES. THE TRUTH METER CALLS THOSE CLAIMS FALSE. THE SCOTT CAMPAIGN IS ADDING VOTES ON NONBINDING RESOLUTIONS, NONE OF THOSE VOTES CAN CHANGE TAX LAW. IT’S ALSO COUNTING MULTIPLE VOTES ON THE SAME TAX BILLS. >> WHAT HAS HE EVER DONE ANYWAY? >> I CAN’T THINK OF ONE THING. GREG: ACCORDING TO CONGRESSIONAL RECORDS, NELSON HAS SPONSORED AND PASSED INTO LAW 25 BILLS AND GOV TRACK LISTS HIM AS THE THIRD MOST CENTRIST DEMOCRAT IN THE SENATE. JUST TAKE A LOOK AT HIS CONGRESSIONAL VOTING HISTORY. THAT’S NELSON RIGHT THERE JUST LEFT OF THE MIDDLE. NOW CHECK OUT THE 538 WHICH COMPARED NELSON’S VOTING HISTORY WITH REPUBLICAN DONALD TRUMP, A LOT OF VOTES IN WHICH NELSON SIDED WITH THE PRESIDENT AND ACCORDING TO THE ANALYSIS HERE, NELSON IS EXPECTED TO SUPPORT TRUMP’S AGENDA 56% OF THE TIME.
