Ocoee Florida Police shoots dog
JUL 22 2017 09:47PM EDT
OCOEE, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) –
Charlie Brooks is wondering whether it was really necessary for Ocoee police to shoot his beloved dog, Duke, an old hound he describes as playful and gentle
Ocoee police Sgt. Mark Bousquet said
Duke approached one of their officers
the officer fired, killing the dog.
Brooks says he saw it all happen.
“Our dogs came out through the dog door, came out toward the officer,” Brooks said. “The officer backed up, took a few steps, pulled his firearm
shot my dog in the head.”
Police say the officers went to Brooks’ house to ask about this boat they saw floating near his property, a boat Brooks says is his, and he says it all happened so fast.
“Very quickly, it happened very quickly,” Brooks said. “As I was coming out of the door, I couldn’t react soon enough.”
Brooks says his wife and 1-year-old son were inside when it happened.
Duke had been in their family for 11 years.
He says his son may miss him the most.
“Right now, there’s only two words he says, ‘Duke’ and ‘mama,’” Brooks said. “He really liked the dog, too.”
Ocoee police said there’s an internal investigation whenever an officer fires his weapon.
Brooks said he just wants to make sure that no dog owner has to needlessly lose a pet this way.
